“The story has its genesis in the summer of 1816, the Year Without a Summer, when Europe and parts of North America underwent a severe climate abnormality. Lord Byron and his young physician John Polidori were staying at the Villa Diodati by Lake Geneva and were visited by Percy Bysshe Shelley, Mary Shelley and Claire Clairmont. Kept indoors by the “incessant rain” of that “wet, ungenial summer”,[3] over three days in June the five turned to telling fantastical stories, and then writing their own. Fueled by ghost stories such as the Fantasmagoriana, William Beckford’s Vathek and quantities of laudanum, Mary Shelley produced what would become Frankenstein, or The Modern Prometheus. Polidori was inspired by a fragmentary story of Byron’s and in “two or three idle mornings” produced “The Vampyre”.”

Baby Dancing to Beyonce

This nearly made me cry with laughter. I can’t tell if it’s a boy or a girl (the name Cory is unisex too), but “she” does little arm moves and leg kicks that are hilarious.

Listened to Built to Spill’s You In Reverse at work today. Really liked it.

The Getty Villa yesterday via my camera phone. It was a beautiful, lazy visit; I just strolled around and took my time, then got a Coke from the cafe and headed home. I wish I had snapped a shot of my favorite bust. The carved portraits of individuals are so fascinating.

So one of my favorite punk bands The Distillers turned into a group called Spinnerette, just how long ago I’m not exactly sure. The myspace says 2006! I don’t know why I haven’t heard more about them. The most startling thing is the fact that the two videos on the myspace reveal clear shots of Brody Dalle (once Armstrong)’s face, which before was always obscured by ridiculous make-up and spiked-up hair. At least to me, who managed to miss seeing them live twice, both times because they were the opening act for a concert I arrived late to, thanks to whomever I was going with. I know the second time was No Doubt at the Arrowhead Pond in Anaheim, because I remember Brody came out on “Just A Girl” and did push-ups with Gwen Stefani, but I can’t remember what the first show was.

I was always intrigued by the scandal of Brody leaving Rancid’s Tim Armstrong for Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme, particularly because so many of the lyrics on the Coral Fang album are obvious: “I’m wishing you didn’t love me no more…There’s a scarlet letter in my chest…Will I die, will I die on a rope?” It makes it all the more passionate an album, and the music is already great. The rage and snarl in her voice is like nobody else’s, but she also shows off the ability to sound really tender, like on “For Tonight You’re Only Here To Know”.

Some of the guitar on Spinnerette’s songs sound awfully like Queens of the Stone Age, especially on “Ghetto Love”, but Homme is not listed anywhere as a member. The best part about the video for that song is that Brody misses the first “Hey!” and mouths “Oops” at the camera. They’ve got her so washed out in that one that she’s almost painfully pretty, especially if you’re used to her old gritty self. I prefer “Baptized In Fire”, where she looks more human, and uncomfortable in a dress. Here are both videos:
